As part of The Works Collective I showed my work at Ventura Lambrate, Milan, for the Milan Furniture Fair. It was an exciting week, with thousands of visitors each day.

About Works:

‘Works’ is an interdisciplinary group of young creatives based in London, UK. The works range from contemporary furniture, to interactive installations, to more narrative-based pieces; all aiming to challenge the perception of design and provoke a change that would fundamentally shape our future world. This collective is an assembly of graduates of the Royal College of Art from various departments that pursue the development and promotion of individual work yet on a cross fertilizing platform.

Triennale Design Museum presents KAMA. Sex and Design, a great exhibition about the relationship between eros and design. The title refers to the Hindu God of sexual pleasure, human love and desire. KAMA tries to deal with one of the more exasperated contemporary “ghosts”, but in the meantime the more removed.

The exhibition wants to investigate how sexuality incorporates itself in the things and makes them medium of knowledge. For the designers, but also for the users.

Airtime on The Culture Show

I was invited by the BBCs Culture Show to the V&A museum to review the new furniture exhibition curated by Nick Humphrey.

“This new gallery, located alongside the Ceramics Study Galleries, presents the Museum’s outstanding collection of British and international furniture from the 15th century to the present day. It focuses on questions of form, function, and techniques of construction and decoration in the creation of furniture for over six hundred years” _ V&A Museum

The Culture Show:

“December sees the opening of the new furniture Galleries at the V&A, which tell the story of how British and European furniture has been made and decorated for over 600 years. Along with some of Britain’s brightest and best new furniture designers, Tom Dyckoff picks some of his favourites amongst the 200 pieces on display.”

Ophelia was beautifully eerie, with set design by Marta Figueirdo in a crumbling monestry, which provided a stunning backdrop for the performance and the Hybreed chair. Delicate and delicious morsels were offered by food designer Rolan Dack. We had to squirt beetroot dressing onto our foie gras crumble, served in egg shells and literally pluck from our own mini vegetable garden planted in mushroom soil. See if you can spot one of the chairs from the ‘Hybreed’ collection, which will be featured in a new theatrical performance: “Tableau Vivant”: OPHELIA IN HYSTERIA, inspired by the painting “Ophelia” by Millais.

Tableau Vivant is an extraordinary two hour session which combines theatre, dance, visual arts, live music and a creative food lab by food designer Rolan Dack. It will be a highly participatory event that blurs the boundaries between actor and audience.

“Our aim is to bring our shows even closer to the audience and we encourage you to take an active part in the performance, food and theatre”

This magical one off performance is not to be missed.. and tickets are selling fast!

Come and check out my work and fellow RCA graduates at this years final show. Design Products will show at Battersea, which has a more raw and beautiful setting compared to the usual gallery space at the Kensington campus.

I will be presenting new works including a lamp, a sofa and a footstool, which are inspired by the use, development, and impact of tools.

The blowing iron, a tool used to blow air into glass, has remained unchanged for centuries. This project has pushed the development of the blowing iron, creating new possibilities in the way the tool can be used and what it can produce. With the new blowing tool multiple lung-like atriums can be blown at once. The tool becomes an extension of the blowers lungs.

Once the glass leaves the kiln it is reunited with the tool that blew it. The tool now works as a stand for the glass, which is illuminated to create an ambient light source.

SHOWstudio have selected ‘Hy-breed’ chairs for their Selling Sex Exhibition. Curated by Nick Knight and Niamh White, the exhibition focuses on women’s perception of the female form and understanding of the self.

They say..

“It is a well known fact that the majority of images we consume are created by men, and too often is feminism an easy target for commodification in the wider context of contemporary culture. SHOWstudio has decided to examine this ‘self-other’ relationship and curate an exhibition about sex, as seen exclusively from a female perspective”.

Exhibition runs from 22nd March - 1st June 2012

Every year the RCA have a Work in Progress exhibition, which provides the opportunity for students to show their current work and gain feedback from the public. The exhibition included work from the Design Products department as well as Design interactions, Architecture, Animation and Innovation Design Engineering.

It was located at the Henry Moore Gallery, RCA, Kensington.

Above is a display of blowing iron tools I have been developing. Under each tool is an example of the glass form it can produce.

‘At One’ and chairs form the ‘Hy-breed’ range have been published in a beautiful new book created by Lisa Morgan for Farameh Media.

“DESIGN BEHIND DESIRE is a beautifully conceived work of art about wanting, longing, yearning, generating and fulfilling of a highly sexual and erotic nature and, as an entity within itself, becomes an object of desire as each sensuously laden page is turned. Many of the striking objects that are depicted are quite dark, some bondage inspired, some surreal, others delicate. There are voluptuous pieces and there are eccentric ones, but never the less brilliant creations. All are united in the strength of their vision, conceptual depth and a high degree of craftsmanship with desire and sexuality at their core”.

To celebrate the opening of their new boutique on London’s Sloane Street, Fendi collaborated with myself and seven other RCA Design Product students to create an installation using their discarded leather. The brief title was ‘Craft/Punk’, the mix of well-practised tradition (associated with Fendi handbags) with raw-edge spontaneity.

‘Blown Leather Portals’ were designed to hold Fendi’s smaller products. The hand-blown glass bubble shapes are enveloped in textured latex cast from Selleria leather to create a delicate leather ‘skin’ appearance. Each ‘portal’ is ringed with hand stitched Selleria leather - a viewing hole for customers to catch a glimpse of the treasures within.

Surreal Women - Guts for Garters Exhibition

‘Hy-breed’ chairs selected to show at the Guts for Garters ‘Surreal Women’ Exhibition at the Cob Gallery, London.

“The first resistance to the male surrealists’ projection of the female figure arose in the writings and paintings of marginalized woman artists and writers associated with Surrealism. Claude Cahun was a woman loathed by Surrealists, who changed her name to be both masculine and Jewish in a time of extreme anti- Semitism. An inspired cross dresser, she is Guts for Garters muse for this theme. The theme is set by distorting expectations and perspective through creating a surreal landscape that will leave you a little unsteady. As ever Guts for Garters will embrace comedy, tease the audience and have plenty of fun”.

The Guts for Garters girls,Cassie and Rachel put on a great show. The opening night was packed with people spilling onto the street. Every so often the guests were indulged with eerie musical interludes and theatrical performances.
